Rams wrap up season at provincials
By Christine Rivet
MISSISSAUGA – The Mount Forest bantam C Rams put the finishing touches to their season at the provincial championships with three solid efforts.

The Rams nearly made it out of their pool of death at the 16-team event, posting a 1-2 (won-lost) record against a division that included the eventual provincial silver medalists from Chatsworth and the fourth-place team from South Bruce.

The Mount Forest girls roared out of the gate on Friday morning, posting an impressive 5-1 decision over North Bay in their opener.

The locals absorbed a 3-2 loss to South Bruce in their second game, a contest which could have gone either way.

In their final outing at the event, the Rams unveiled their new breakout and had the defending Ontario champs hemmed in their own zone for much of the game. A couple late goals from Chatsworth resulted in 4-1 decision for the Rebels, a score that frankly flattered the winners.

“I truly believe our defence was the best of any team we faced all season – that includes Chatsworth and the B team from Saugeen Shores,” said Rams assistant coach Christine R.

“We would put our four-player blue line corps – Jazzy, Jayde, Kyla and Abby – against any other team’s. They played tenacious, fearless, aggressive hockey all season long. And they dialed it up a notch at the biggest event of our season.”

The Rams also got great mileage out of their centres over the weekend.

“Haven and Morgan were exceptional,” said head coach Bill W. “Strong on the puck, tough on faceoffs, first to the puck and didn’t back down from bigger teams.”

Wingers Hayley, Chloe, Emily, Peyton and Olivia (Olaf) brought their best efforts of the season, too through the weekend’s three games.

Goalie Alyssa V. made several key saves to keep the Rams in the hunt.

Hayley, the Rams’ relentless water bug, led the team’s points parade over the weekend with a goal and three points. Kyla, Emily and Haven added two goals apiece. Chloe chipped in with a goal and an assist.

“It was so nice to see all the girls lay everything on the line this weekend. The coaches are so proud of them,” said Bill W.

“All you can ask is the kids leave it all out on the ice. And you know what? They left it all on the ice. How can you walk away from that and have any disappointment?”

The coaches would also like to give a shout-out to the rest of the Rams staff – assistant coach Murray K., manager Amber M. and trainer Mandi F. – for their unwavering support of the team and their indispensible advice.

“Thanks, too, to all the parents for their support this season,” said coach Bill.

Chatsworth eventually fell 2-1 to Lucan in the provincial gold-medal game. South Bruce absorbed a 2-0 loss to Belmont in the bantam C division’s bronze game.
