Silver lining in Orangeville
ORANGEVILLE -- The Mount Forest peewee C girls punctuated their spectacular weekend with a silver medal at the 2015 Sweetheart Tournament on Sunday.

After roaring to first place in their five-team division, including a past-their-bedtime 6-1 romp over the Cold Creek Comets on Saturday night, the Rams were running on fumes in the final.

But the Ram girls earned the respect of their parents, coaches and their opponents, a B team from Caledon, in a 2-0 loss during Sunday's early-morning gold game.

The Mount Forest girls looked a little haggard because of the short turnaround time and the long trip home and back to Orangeville the next day, obstacles the Caledon Coyotes didn't have to contend with.

But no matter. The Rams weren't looking for excuses. They played valiantly, led by Mount Forest's tourney MVP, our resident force of nature Morgan F., and dug down deep for every ounce of energy they had left.

Shea M. was awarded with the Hard Hat in the gold game. Alyssa V. took the red cape, as the Rams' Super Girl award winner for her numerous spectacular saves in the final, a feat also acknowledged by the Coyotes who gave Alyssa an extra cheer during the medal presentations.

On Saturday, the Rams bested these same Coyotes in their round-robin pairing 1-0 with captain Haven L. scoring the game's lone marker in the defensive thriller.

Later Saturday, Mount Forest needed a big win to punch their tickets to the final, breaking a three-way tie for first place in the division on goal differential. And our girls responded with the 6-1 thrashing over Cold Creek.

Once again, Morgan F. led the scoring parade with a hat trick and four points. Paige. D. had a goal and three assists while linemate Shea M. had three helpers.  Jayde M. and Presley B., who scored her first of many more to come in a Rams' uniform, added singles.

This past weekend, the Rams found a new gear in the gearbox and proved they will be a force to be reckoned with for the remainder of the season.

With huge contributions from every player on their 11-player roster this past weekend, the coaches couldn't be more proud of the girls.

"What a wonderful payoff for our girls and their parents," said coach Bill Walker. "We've worked the girls relentlessly in practices and warmups and it was so good for them to see the results of all their sweat."

The Rams will take a much-needed day off on Monday before filing into the Mount Forest arena for a 5:30 p.m. practice on Tuesday.

Our next game is Sun., Feb. 8 when the West-Grey Warriors the Rams. It's a 5:45 p.m. puck drop.

A note to our parents: Mount Forest's Feb. 17 game in Chatsworth has been rescheduled to March 10 at 7:30 p.m. in Keady.
