Rams hand out end of year hardware
The peewee C Rams handed out their year-end awards recently at the association’s banquet.

And it was tough sledding for the team staff as there were several very deserving candidates for the awards. But none of the awards needed coach Bill to step in with his tie-breaking vote.

Team captain Haven L. took home the team’s MVP honours after her splendid, unwavering effort this season in all three zones.

“Picking a captain can be a tricky thing and we couldn't have done any better than with Haven,” coach Bill said.

“Our Jonathan Toews clone was a sponge this season, soaking up everything the coaches were teaching. She had a career year in points and even when her stick got cold for a while midway through the season, Haven still found ways to be invaluable on and off the ice.”

The team’s best forward award went to Morgan F. after she deposited a personal-best 29 goals this season.

“Our Southgate Stomper carried us on her shoulders early this season, giving her teammates time to find their legs,” said coach Bill.

“She's got all the earmarks of a prototypical power forward – big, strong, and fearless.”

Jayde M. was presented with the team’s top defenceman award for a tireless performance on the Rams’ blue line.

“Jayde was a tower of strength on defense this season, rarely losing steam even when we were down to three D late in the season,” coach Bill said.

“She caught the opposition by surprise with just how solid she was on her skates. And she even found time to add to her vocabulary with some interesting talks with Chatsworth players this season.”

Abby W. won the sportsmanship and dedication award for a dependable and robust effort which featured only one penalty all season long.

“This award was the toughest to give out because we had so many deserving candidates from our hard-working team,” coach Bill said.

“Abby may have been our most consistent defenceman this season, playing solid D, making a good first pass, and being a physical presence in front of her own net. And she's still grumbling that putting her stick between a player's feet shouldn't be a penalty if the girl doesn't have the good sense not to step on it.”

Goalie Alyssa V. grabbed the most-improved player award for her ever-improving campaign in her first season between the pipes.

“I'll admit I'm biased here because I am a goalie but in my mind this is the toughest position in hockey,” coach Bill said.

“Alyssa surprised us all during tryouts by showing up in pads and she kept surprising us all season with her steady improvement. 'Lyssa did have a few nights early in the season where she reminded us that she was a rookie but by the end of the year she displayed the poise of a veteran. Her picture must be on a wanted poster somewhere after she almost singlehandedly stole two points from Russell Castor, the eventual provincial bronze medalist, at the provincials.”

It was a fantastic season with a great group of girls and their equally terrific parents. We hope you had as much fun as we did, said coach Bill.
