Pee Wee Girls Claim Gold
This past weekend was the inaugural girls Classic and the arena was full from Friday through the finals on Sunday morning, parents grandparents friends and even patrons of the craft show got caught up in all the action of the weekend.
Our pee wee girls were very excited to be having a home town tournament for most of the girls this was their first ever tournament within an hour of home so it was great to see the excitement to be playing at home and missing school didn't hurt either.
Our first game was against the Walkerton Capitals this team has been undefeated this year and has been rolling over the competition but after 3 periods of play and some outstanding goaltending and team defence the final score was 0-0 this was a defensive battle. player of the game went to our goalie Brainna Gordon for another shutout her 6th one this year.
Game #2 was against a familiar opponent the Wilmot Wolverinies who always play well against us but our girls are a determined bunch this weekend with the coaches threatening to send them back to school for the afternoon if they don't play well. Shea Lyn brought her A game with her today and she was outskating everyone on the ice today when she uses her speed size doesn't matter and she got player of the game. Final score 4-0 win we are now 2-0
Game # 3 puts us up against Alphabet soup (TCDMHA) and the girls are ready to go there all the girls need is a win or a tie to advance on points to the finals and TCDMHA needs to win to move on so it was a heck of a game with the play going back and forth girls are diving on both ends of th ice to prevent shots from getting through and when they did both goalies played extremely well. In the 2nd period TCDMHA gets on the board 1-0 and that's all they usually need , but 1 minute later Chaise has the answer and wrists one over the goalies glove to tie it up and with that the game ends with the TC goalie pulled for an extra attacker but our defensive style of play gave them no good scoring chances. Final score 1-1 player of the game was Chaise McRobb.
Game #4 Kincardine is next and Carly has an answer for them a hat trick on the first few shots of the game to give us an early lead , after a quick timeout for the opposition to regroup it was a very good game after that with Shea Lyn rounding out the scoring for a 4-1 final. Player of the game is Carly I think she is finally listening and realizes if you hit the net good things happen! With that the girls are off to the finals of our own tournament every game has been tough so the finals will be no easy game.
The Finals vs Walkerton and after playing them in round robin play both teams know its do or die. Both teams came out flying at the drop of the puck I didn't now some of my skaters had that gear in them and they never let up all game it was back and forth with neither team getting any quality scoring chances. Our defence corps of Lexi W , Jordyn, Abbigail, Alexis and Bailey played as good as you can ask them to play great job girls. 0-0 after 1 period this was a nail bitter and as the crowd grew in attendance it got louder in the arena with so many fans from the Atom team staying to watch and cheer on their peers after their big win congrats Atom team. 2nd period started the same as the 1st period with either team giving an inch 0-0 after 2. Into the 3rd we go and this is it our forwards of Chaise, Carly, Lexi R, Alyssa, Shea, Brianna Gorman, Chloe, Tori, won;t let up and they keep pouring it on only to be turned away by a good Walkerton defense , holy cow what a game and the crowd is still growing as nobody dares leave the arena due to the fantastic hockey game going on 0-0 after regulation. That's 6 periods of hockey with no score between these 2 teams and both have a pretty good offense. Overtime is 5 on 5 for 5 minutes sudden death and 20 seconds into overtime Alyssa and Lexi R think they have the winner but only to have the ref wave it off saying he was in the process of blowing the whistle.
5 minutes is up and we are going to 4 on 4 for another 5 minutes and the play is really opening up with end to end action but both goalies are ready for it and after 5 minutes the buzzer goes still tied 0-0.
Its a shoot out to determine the winner and with a quick glance at the crowd the arena is a full as i have ever seen for a girls hockey game the lobby is packed and the stands getting near capacity what a way to finish off the first girls Classic. first shooter for the Rams is Chaise she goes in dekes and fires it over the shoulder of the Walketon goalie and at the same time the Walkerton shooter is denied by Brianna with the poke check. 2nd shooters for each team go and both goalies stand tall and turn them away, 3rd shooter is Abby she goes in and scores as Brianna turns aside all 3 shooters and with that the Pee Wee girls win the inaugural Girls Classic you couldn't have wrote a better script! Congratulations to Walkerton on giving us all we could handle i,m sure we will meet again this season.
