Tournament Champs
This weekend the Lady Rams travelled to Mitchell for their first hockey tournament of the season.
The girls got underway Friday morning as they faced Waterloo in the first game. Having just played Waterloo the previous Sunday in regular season action our team knew it would be a battle. After a fortunate bounce in the opening 18 seconds of the first, the girls found themselves down 1-0 till halfway through the second frame. The girls knotted things up at 1-1 to finish the second period. Our team kept up their good play and grabbed the lead early in the 3rd as they continued to pressure their opponents. The Lady Rams would add an empty netter to seal away a 3-1 win. Game 2 that afternoon would see the girls square off against the Woodstock Wildcats. The Rams came out flying in this game and after the first found themselves ahead 7-0. They would add another goal in the second period and cruised to a 8-0 victory.
Game 3 Saturday was against Twin Centre. a win would assure the girls a spot in Sunday`s final. Right from the moment the puck was dropped the intensity level was high. Both teams played hard and gave the fans in attendance a great contest to watch. Early in the second period the Lady Rams finally found the back of the net to grab a 1-0 lead. The rest of this game would go back and forth and when the buzzer sounded it was Mt. Forest walking away with a 1-0 decision.
Sundays final would be a rematch against the Waterloo Ravens and what a game it was for the capacity crowd in attendance. The girls came out to play early and definitely gave the Ravens all they could handle in the first period. It wasn`t until early in the second when the Rams found the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. Waterloo stormed back and in the final 2 minutes of the second they had taken a 2-1 lead. Our girls dug deep in the third period and squared things at 2-2. Mt. Forest kept the pressure on for the remainder of the 3rd but when the buzzer sounded it was 2-2 which forced sudden death. After a quick pep talk from the coaches the girls played a good solid 5 minutes of sudden death which would not see either team score. Now we were off to a 5 player shootout to determine a winner. Only 4 shooters were needed as 2 of our girls scored and none of their first four, FINALLY WE CAN BREATHE, the girls are the 2017 Mitchell Tournament Champs.
These girls played hard all weekend and gave it everything, but none more important than playing as a team of 14 strong. Well done girls you deserve to be called the CHAMPS!!!!!
