The
Mount Forest bantam C Rams were off to the races, up four goals
against their rivals from Owen Sound when matters turned serious
during their 5-0 route over the visitors in exhibition play on
Wednesday night.
Mid-way through the third, an Owen Sound player took a run at goalie Alyssa V., driving her into the back of the net, knocking her helmet off.
After several tense minutes, Alyssa was helped to the dressing room and taken to hospital with what was later determined to be a concussion.
The concerned Rams were told Alyssa was being taken care of and were able to carry on with Hayley G. bravely volunteering to assume Alyssa's position.
“We told our defence to bear down and not let any shots through on Hayley because we knew she'd be a little nervous back there since she hasn't played goalie for a couple years,” said coach Bill W.
“Hayley did a super job, making a couple saves soccer style and preserving Alyssa's shutout.”
Olivia S. scored a pair of goals for the hosts. Emily A., Chloe K. and Kyla P. each scored once.
Several Mount Forest girls were already playing out of position on Wednesday on account of a knee injury to centre Morgan F. who sat this one out.
Captain Kyla P. moved from the blue line to centre and winger Peyton M. made her debut on the back end for the Rams, looking poised and confident.
Also, Jayde M. and Abby W. were moved from their usual posts on defense temporarily up front and were able to make solid contributions.
In addition, call-up winger Avery M. did an admirable job helping out the Rams on Wednesday and will see action again with the team Thursday when action shifts to Clifford for a 7 p.m. match against South Bruce.
Jasmine M. took the Hard Hat Award on Wednesday for her splendid play on the Rams' blue line in all three zones.
Hayley was presented with the Super Girl cape for her usual blue-collar effort up front and again when she was called upon to help out the team in goal.
“All in all, a good effort from the girls under tough circumstances,” said coach Bill.
“The girls were very concerned about Alyssa and are hopeful she will bounce back quickly.”
