Rams earn tie in Saugeen Shores

SOUTHAMPTON – The Mount Forest bantam C Rams have gone where no other league rival has gone before.

The Rams strode into the Southampton arena on Thursday night and picked up a point, earning a valuable 2-2 tie with the mighty Saugeen Shores Lightning.

The undefeated Lightning had not surrendered so much as a tie in their previous six league games this season.

“Everyone had a hand in the game’s outcome,” said coach Bill W. “Right up and down our lineup.

“We tried to keep the game plan simple because Saugeen Shores has such a good team. We didn’t want our girls to feel overwhelmed. They just had to do their own job and the results would follow.”

The Mount Forest girls relied on some stellar goalkeeping from Alyssa V. who flashed the leather time and again in Thursday’s contest, taking the Hard Hat Award.

Once again, call-up Evelyn N. put in a great effort on the Rams’ blue line, thwarting the Lightning’s attack and setting up some nifty Mount Forest rushes.

Assistant captain Morgan F. was a terror inside the Saugeen Shores’ end, making quick work of the opposition’s defencemen. She earned the Super Girl Cape.

Rams swingman Peyton M. scored her second goal in as many games to fire up the Rams’ offence.

The last time these two teams hooked up, the Rams absorbed a 5-0 loss, back on Oct. 5. It was the Mount Forest girls’ first outing of the season.

And so Thursday’s contest illustrated just how far the Rams have come in the past couple months.

“A great way to head into the Christmas break,” said the coach. “We can reflect on this game for a while because we did so many things so well.”

The Rams improve to 11-8-5 with the tie and will now enjoy a 10-day break before they convene again in a rematch with Saugeen Shores on Dec. 27.

It’s a noon start at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
