Rams fall just short in battle with South Bruce

MILDMAY – The short-staffed Mount Forest Rams got some great mileage out of their wingers on Saturday and assembled three solid periods here.

Except for a minor miscue late in the second period when the bantam C Rams surrendered the game-winner, Mount Forest was every bit South Bruce’s match in a 3-2 loss.
“We definitely played good enough to win that game,” said head coach Bill Walker.

“Our wingers were really flying. It was great to see because we absolutely knew they have it in them.”

The Rams had just 10 skaters and used every bit of the muscles they've built up with their off-ice workouts in staying stride-for-stride with South Bruce for 45 minutes of hockey.

The Rams got a goal and an assist from both Paige D. and Emily A. who skated on a new line combo, centered by Hayley G. who played just her second game in her new position.

Chloe K. and Olivia S. both had solid efforts and did yeoman's work on the penalty kill. Centre Morgan F. was a force at both ends of the ice.

Hayley took the hard hat for some splendid work chasing down South Bruce’s forwards on the back check, staying high in the slot to retrieve loose pucks and supporting the Ram defence.

Speaking of defence, the Mount Forest D corps is quickly proving to be among the finest in the league, said the coach.

“Our blueline put together two real solid games this weekend,” Walker said of Friday night’s 5-1 loss to Chatsworth Township.

“Unfortunately, we didn’t get any points out of those two games. But we’ll just keep working hard and we are confident the results will follow.”

The Rams, who held the high-powered Chatsworth girls to a 1-1 deadlock heading into the final period, got their lone goal Friday from call-up Avery M. on Friday.

The Mount Forest girls get another shot at Chatsworth on Jan. 30. It’s a 3:30 p.m. contest at the Mount Forest Sports Complex.
